Game Review: Spider-Man PS4 (No spoilers)

The Web-head is back!

Spider-Man, the latest game produced by Insomniac Games, dropped for PlayStation 4 in September 2018, and I recently got my hands on a copy.

With beautiful graphics, a story that doesn’t take itself too seriously, and our favorite hero full of his trademark quips, the game is a prime example of a Marvel game done right.

The pacing of the story sucks you in, and there is plenty on the map to discover, ranging from back-pack trophies, common NYC landmarks including Avengers tower, and a whole slate of side missions, the game seems well thought out.

The biggest issue I have with the game is there are parts of it where it feels more like an old-school button masher fight game and the fights can become tedious after a bit. Being a marvel hero who bounces around beating up bad guys, a certain level of that is to be expected but at times it does seem a bit much.

As far as the story, without getting into spoiler territory, the game developers went with an original but non-origin story approach. As the game starts, Spider-Man is well established in NYC, Peter Parker no longer works for the Daily Bugle, and Jamieson is still a jackass. Avengers tower in the game is a nod to the greater Marvel universe, though the Avengers have yet to make an appearance in my play through.

Aside from the repetitiveness that seems to occur, I think that this is a great, beautifully crafted game that Insomniac should be proud of. My rating for the web-head’s latest PS4 adventure is 4/5.
